The moon has always occupied a powerful place in the human imagination.

When people in ancient times told stories, the waxing and waning of the moon was commonly used as a metaphor for the passage of time. The full moon and new moon in particular represented the light and darkness of the night, and were often used as the starting point for a story. Within the stories told on the island of Ushima, the moon connects people to their record of the past, and together with a myriad of emotions, these traditions weave our way toward the future.
